Douglas Gook is a third-generation settler who has been a committed farmer, ecological forest worker, and Land-Air-Water defender on the unceded traditional territory of the Lhtako Dene First Nation in Quesnel, BC. He brings a lifetime of dedication to community service, social justice, and environmental protection to all his activities and interactions.
Douglas’s journey was inspired by his Irish roots from his mother Genevieve Long’s ancestors, and by the community-infused political dedication of his father, Peter Gook. He is the youngest of seven sons and four daughters. From an early age, he took on the stewardship of the family farm and forest woodlot. This led to him becoming one of the founding members of the Cariboo Horse Loggers Association, which was dedicated to ecological, employment-intensive forestry. Its value-added silviculture nurtures the potential for a sustainable wood manufacturing future. Combining this work with wildcrafting and organic gardening has resulted in a long history of involvement in farmers markets.
First Nations justice and sovereignty; championing solutions to the climate emergency; local organic food production; mining law reform; voluntary and societal simplicity; ending intergenerational inequality; shifting from short-rotation, corporate industrial fibre mining to Natural Selection Forestry; transitioning to active transportation to reduce dependency on single-occupancy vehicles — these are just some of the issues Douglas has actively championed.
Douglas was the Green Party of Canada candidate in Battle River–Crowfoot for the April 2025 general election, where many described his chances of winning as “a snowball’s chance in hell.” Whether snowballs or the glaciers on the eastern slopes of the Rockies — crucial to Alberta’s water resources — it’s long overdue for Battle River–Crowfoot to elect a champion for the protection of these sacred essentials for life.
As your MP, Douglas has committed to becoming a full-time resident of the Battle River–Crowfoot region. His commitment to neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood Community Consensus Democracy will bring a whole new level of democratic reform to communities in this riding.
He will be dedicated to listening to your concerns and working with all levels of government to build a sustainable, equitable future for Battle River–Crowfoot.
