The Green Party of Canada joins the Green Party of Ontario in opposing expansion of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The silence of federal Liberal MPs in the Greater Toronto Area is unacceptable, and Premier Ford claims PM Carney supports his power grab.

Greens warn that the same bulldozer approach the Carney government displayed in Bills C-4 and C-5 could be extended to Billy Bishop. Any jet expansion would require federal approval, including sign-off on major changes such as runway expansion from Toronto Island. That makes the silence of GTA Liberal MPs deeply concerning. Worse, Liberal messaging appears to suggest that opposition to Billy Bishop expansion belongs to a different era, as though concerns about clean air, waterfront protection, public health, and climate responsibility are outdated.

“Toronto residents have every reason to be alarmed by the bulldozer style of politics we are seeing from Ottawa and Queens Park,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada. “Billy Bishop expansion cannot happen without federal approval. GTA Liberal MPs are silent, or worse, laying the groundwork to support Ford. Toronto needs Green MPs in Parliament to stop this before it happens.”

That is why Toronto needs Green MPs like Pooja Malhotra in Scarborough Southwest and Andrew Massey in University—Rosedale. MPs who will defend communities, challenge backroom deals, and fight harmful projects before they are forced through.

“People in University—Rosedale understand how precious Toronto’s waterfront is. It is not an empty space waiting to be handed over to private interests,” said Andrew Massey, Green Party candidate for University—Rosedale. “Expanding Billy Bishop would mean more noise and more pollution for the people who live, work, and gather nearby.”

“Communities across Toronto need representatives who will actually fight for the public interest,” said Pooja Malhotra, Green Party candidate for Scarborough Southwest and Shadow Cabinet Critic for Immigration & Refugees. “People are being told to accept top-down decision making on projects against their interests while their basic needs go unmet. Canadians deserve MPs who will fight for the investments communities need: affordable housing, clean air, and reliable public transit.”

The Green Party of Canada demands the federal government reject any attempt to bulldoze massive airport expansion through Toronto’s waterfront. Ottawa must respect local communities, and invest in the
public transit and infrastructure Canadians actually need.
