(OTTAWA) October 28, 2016 - The Green Party of Canada released the following statement after an agreement was reached in Brussels on the adoption of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA):
"The Green Party of Canada is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to hold a true democratic debate so that Canadians understand the stakes of CETA, including its use of risky foreign investor provisions," said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). "This agreement undermines environmental regulations and will favour multinational companies at the expense of Canadian sovereignty. In the current form, we must continue to oppose the adoption of CETA."
Daniel Green, GPC Deputy Leader, said: "Canada should also seek to embed more transparency in the arbitration of foreign investor claims, and negotiate more protection of our dairy and cheese producers."
On this last point, Jean Rousseau, GPC Agriculture Critic, said: "The government is neglecting small farmers in its unabashed promotion of CETA. Our farmers and artisans are trying to survive despite the influence of large corporations. The mass import of European cheeses will devastate our homegrown industry. "
