(OTTAWA) -- The Green Party of Canada released the following statement upon receiving news of the latest government coalition in New Zealand:
“On behalf of Canadian Greens, I would like to congratulate Jacinda Ardern on becoming the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and extend to her my best wishes on leading the coalition government,” said Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May (Saanich-Gulf Islands).
“For the first time in history, the Green Party of New Zealand will have ministers in parliament, negotiating three ministers and an undersecretary with the ruling Labour party. I wish to congratulate the New Zealand Greens and Leader James Shaw on this monumental achievement,” Ms. May said.
“These ministerial appointments represent yet another breakthrough for the global Green movement, cementing the perception of the Greens serving a crucial role in an age of catastrophic climate change, and mounting inequality. As the case in British Columbia demonstrates, including a strong Green voice in the political discussion brings with it far greater cross-party collaboration, prioritizing results over partisan bickering. I am confident that the people of New Zealand will benefit from bolder climate leadership, strengthened environmental protections, and greater equality through the presence of Greens at the table,” Ms. May concluded.
