I went to my first Young Greens meeting after graduating from the journalism program at Holland College. I had an idea: Why not extend our usual campus activities at UPEI to include HC? After electing eight Green MLAs in the provincial election, it was clear the party was gaining traction on P.E.I. and it was possible the student voting population could earn us a federal seat. Things move fast within the GPC, especially during an election, so I got to work on Darcie Lanthier’s campaign right away. I lead a team of volunteers around the Holland College campus in canvassing and mainstreeting efforts, which helped to increase the student voting rate. I talked to students about their political concerns and reminded them to vote at the on-campus polling station. It was exciting to see signs up all around my neighbourhood showing support, and fulfilling to chat with people in my community about the issues we face. Darcie came in second place, which was a great achievement for the Green Party of P.E.I. Since the election, I’ve had a desire to get more deeply involved. It’s an exciting time for us, with unprecedented voting numbers all across the country. I’m looking forward to seeing how this party will grow and work to improve the lives of constituents in our province and nationwide.
