OTTAWA – This year’s World Health Day theme – Our Planet Our Health – is a timely reminder of the inextricable link between human health and environmental health. Canada witnessed tragic evidence of this when extreme hot weather killed almost 600 people in B.C. last year. <\/p>
While our country continues to blow through emissions reduction targets and our government persists in offering incremental climate policies, the crisis worsens and the chances of preserving a livable world diminish.<\/p>
“The impacts of the climate emergency extend beyond our physical health,” said Green Party interim Leader Amita Kuttner. “Climate-related disasters such as heat domes, wildfires, floods and mudslides exact a devastating emotional toll on individuals and communities. <\/p>
“Our health care system must adapt to this new reality by providing access to a broad range of mental health services to help people deal with the grief and anxiety caused by these events.”<\/p>
