The Green Party of Canada calls on the federal government to suspend high-level engagement with Pakistan until the incarceration of political opposition ends.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have documented the systematic dismantling of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) through the “weaponization of the legal system.” While Ottawa, London, and Washington remain silent to preserve strategic interests, the Green Party demands adherence to international law.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic Leverage and Policy Recommendations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Suspend FIPA Negotiations<\/strong>
    Canada must halt negotiations on the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA). Pursuing investment guarantees with a state actively undermining its own constitution is a strategic contradiction. We must not proceed to the second round.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Bar State Delegation from PDAC 2026
    <\/strong>Toronto\u2019s upcoming Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention must not host Pakistan\u2019s state delegation. Canada cannot provide a platform for regime officials to court investment while under UN scrutiny. We urge the government to rescind these invitations immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Downgrade Bilateral Consultations<\/strong>
    The 6th Round of Bilateral Political Consultations in Islamabad must be downgraded. Engagement should be restricted to essential consular and security matters until the arbitrary detention of political leadership ceases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    From the Reko Diq mining project to agricultural exports, Canada holds significant leverage. We must use this economic weight to uphold the rule of law rather than insulating commercial interests from a deepening human rights crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
