OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada stands in full support of the urgent and unified call to action from municipal leaders across the country. In an open letter addressed to federal party leaders, mayors and councillors outlined five bold, achievable national projects to address the escalating climate crisis and growing economic threats from U.S. trade policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Green Party agrees: the time for incrementalism has passed. We face two existential threats\u2014the Trump presidency and the longstanding climate breakdown. Both demand swift, coordinated national action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Canada must wake up to the reality that climate action is not a niche issue. It\u2019s a matter of national security, economic resilience, and justice,\u201d said Elizabeth May, Green Party co-Leader. \u201cWe commend the mayors and councillors for articulating an ambitious path forward; one that is urgently needed. It\u2019s high-time the federal government shows leadership. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Green Party has long called for the very types of initiatives laid out in the letter: a national clean electricity grid, high-speed rail, non-market housing, building retrofits, and climate disaster preparedness. These ideas are not new to Greens\u2014they are foundational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jonathan Pedneault, Green Party co-leader, added: \u201cWhile other parties flirt with half-measures or backslide into fossil fuel subsidies and pipeline politics, Greens have remained consistent. We are the only party with a track record of putting climate and people first. This is not the time to double down on dead-end projects. This is the time to rise to the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Climate change is not only an environmental issue\u2014it is a matter of sovereignty. The Canadian Arctic is warming at three times the global average. Melting permafrost, rising sea levels, and extreme weather are already compromising our infrastructure, threatening communities, and leaving us vulnerable to geopolitical instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The climate crisis intersects directly with our national security,” said Pedneault. “Protecting the North means confronting the climate emergency head-on. That means ending fossil fuel subsidies and investing in clean, sovereign infrastructure now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Green Party echoes the call from municipal leaders to redirect public funds away from polluting industries and toward resilient, community-driven projects. This is how we build a stronger, more independent, and climate-resilient Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
