{"id":16025,"date":"2025-04-08T10:11:08","date_gmt":"2025-04-08T14:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenparty.ca\/?post_type=article&#038;p=16025"},"modified":"2025-04-08T10:11:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T14:11:09","slug":"green-party-calls-for-strategic-national-lumber-reserve-as-u-s-escalates-softwood-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.greenparty.ca\/en\/news\/green-party-calls-for-strategic-national-lumber-reserve-as-u-s-escalates-softwood-tariffs","title":{"rendered":"Green Party Calls for Strategic National Lumber Reserve as U.S. Escalates Softwood Tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">OTTAWA &#8211; In response to the United States\u2019 plan to significantly hike tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber\u2014reportedly up to 34.45%\u2014the Green Party of Canada is calling for the immediate development of a Federal Strategic Reserve of softwood lumber and other essential resources to protect Canadian interests, stabilize prices, and revitalize domestic industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The proposed U.S. tariff hike follows a 2023 increase from 8.05% to 14.54%, and would be a devastating blow to Canadian forestry workers. U.S. President Donald Trump has continued to claim that the United States does not need Canadian lumber, despite clear evidence of supply shortages and housing crises in both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cEnough is enough,\u201d said Jonathan Pedneault, Green Party co-leader. \u201cCanada must stop being held hostage by unfair U.S. trade practices. It\u2019s time we focused on building resilience at home\u2014by keeping our lumber here, using it to address our housing crisis, and investing in Canadian jobs, not U.S. corporate profits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Green Party is urging the federal government to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Establish a Strategic Reserve of softwood lumber, aluminum, steel, and other critical materials;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Stop raw log exports and prioritize domestic milling and processing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Work with Premier David Eby and First Nations in B.C. to ensure Indigenous leadership and stewardship in forestry policy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Use Canadian lumber to build climate-resilient, culturally appropriate public housing\u2014particularly on First Nations reserves where housing needs are acute;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Ensure long-term maintenance funding for public housing so that infrastructure remains safe and livable;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Require that logging profits derived from public lands be reinvested in Canadian communities, not siphoned to foreign shareholders.<br><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;American forest industries have pressed for tariffs against Canada &#8211; and generally succeeded, in getting White House after White House to violate trade agreements with Canada,\u201d said Elizabeth May, co-leader of the Green Party. \u201cWhether on shakes and shingles in the 80s or dimension lumber, forest products are a long-time trade irritant. The Trump trade wars have escalated the threat.
