Green Party Statement for World Mental Health Day

OTTAWA – The theme for World Mental Health Day this year is “Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality”. On this day, the Green Party reaffirms its commitment to expanding and improving mental health support across Canada.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health problems, with young people, racialized communities and LGBTQ+ individuals reporting the highest incidence of poor mental health. At the same time, anxiety about climate change and severe weather are placing increased strain on people’s mental wellbeing.

In its 2021 election platform, the Green Party pledged to establish a national mental health strategy and a suicide prevention strategy. It also called for increased investments in Indigenous-led mental health along with support for First Nations, Métis and Inuit in rebuilding traditional knowledge systems around healing and wellness.
