Green Party Statement on Rosh Hashanah

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada wishes Jewish Canadians and Jews everywhere a peaceful and joyful Rosh Hashanah. The holy celebration of the Jewish New Year begins tonight at sundown, on the eve of Tishrei 1 and ends after nightfall on Tishrei 2, September 8, 2021.

“Once again we find ourselves celebrating the Jewish high holidays during a pandemic, making it challenging for families and friends to gather for traditional feasts and prayers,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “Nonetheless, families and communities have learned to find innovative and meaningful ways to celebrate and I hope this year they will manage to do so.

“The traditional challah bread and apples dipped in honey symbolize our wishes for a sweet, blessed year. As we light the candles in our home this evening, we will remember those who may have lost loved ones this past year: a mother, father, brother, sister or friend who is unable to join the celebration. But we also acknowledge the renewal symbolized in this celebration of the new year and the opportunity for reflection that it offers.

“From my family, and all of us at the Green Party, ‘Shana Tova!’ “
