Green Party Statement on the Anniversary of the explosion in Lebanon

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada remembers the hundreds of people killed when a devastating explosion occurred in the port of Beirut, on August 4, 2020. The tragic event flattened parts of the Lebanese capital and left thousands wounded.

“Today our thoughts are with Lebanese Canadians and all the families and friends in Beirut who lost loved ones in this catastrophic event as well as with those whose lives and communities were forever changed,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “There is nothing that can prepare us for such a horrendous tragedy. Physical structures can eventually be rebuilt, but the profound grief and pain resulting from such loss and injury may take years to heal.

“Courage, resilience and ingenuity have allowed the Lebanese people to overcome formidable challenges in the past, and we are optimistic that those strengths will endure as the citizens of Beirut rebuild their lives and their beautiful port city.”
