Green Party Leader Annamie Paul welcomes the election of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris

"On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I want to congratulate President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris on their historic win. In particular, I want to pay tribute to Kamala as she becomes the highest-ranking woman in the history of the United States. The election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris is an opportunity to usher in a new chapter in the vital U.S.-Canada relationship.  We should expect to see enhanced climate commitments across North America. In particular, the President-elect confirmed that his Administration would impose Carbon Border Tariffs on carbon-intensive goods from jurisdictions that fail to meet their climate obligations and I share this commitment. Canada must demonstrate the same leadership by implementing our own Carbon Border Adjustment or get left behind.

The results of this election are also an opportunity to renew a shared commitment to the rule of law and human rights. Dr. King said that, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere'. As it stands, our Federal Court has ruled that the Canada/U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement violates Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It must be repealed immediately or radically reformed in order to ensure that it respects international law and protects the fundamental human rights of asylum seekers.

In the days ahead, we will announce how the Green Party of Canada intends to work with the incoming Biden/Harris administration if elected as Canada's first GREEN GOVERNMENT. In the meantime, I look forward to the ushering in of a new era of international cooperation and collaboration."
