Statement by the Green Party of Canada

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada today released the following statement:

The Green Party of Canada announced today that Dylan Perceval-Maxwell is no longer a contestant for the party leadership.

The party’s Leadership Contest Authority (LCA) found that several recent statements by Mr. Perceval-Maxwell were inappropriate and were not aligned with the party’s core values, in particular respect for diversity. The LCA determined that he should no longer participate in the contest. Mr. Perceval-Maxwell exercised his right to appeal that ruling to the Leadership Contest Committee, which upheld the LCA’s decision.

The Green Party accepts that disagreements will arise in the heat of a debate or contest, but expects that those who are called out for making discriminatory statements will reflect, learn and commit to doing better. This is especially true of anyone who aspires to a position of leadership – in politics or in any other field.

The Green Party will not remain neutral or stay silent in situations like these. Decisive action is crucial to ensure safe and equitable spaces.

The party respects every individual’s right of free speech but we will not provide a platform to normalise racism and discrimination.  We are committed to creating a forum where contestants can debate the solutions that Canada needs to survive and thrive in the 21st century.
