Elizabeth May issues a statement on Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s resignation

MADRID, SPAIN  — Green Party Parliamentary Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) issued the following statement from Madrid, where she is attending COP25 as part of the Canadian delegation.

“Political stories are rarely "happily ever after." My own time as leader of the Green Party had its ups and downs, but I treasure the fact I was able to step down on my own terms and feeling
great about it.

It is unquestionably sad, whether one agrees with the policies and goals of another party's leader, to see that person face a harsh reality of political life.  Sometimes you have to go before you want to.

To Jill, especially, I want to extend heartfelt thanks for her non-partisan kindnesses - including sharing her homemade cupcakes. She made many sacrifices as a wife and mother married to a man so fully occupied with work as the Speaker and then as party leader.

To Andrew, I send my best wishes as he makes choices about his life and next steps. I know his faith is strong.  He is young and has many talents. And he has a strong and beautiful family.”
