Statement on candidate in Chatham-Kent-Leamington

The Green Party candidate for Chatham-Kent-Leamington, Mark Vercouteren, has assured GPC that he is fully supportive and unequivocal in his support of a woman's right to a timely, safe and legal abortion. Mr. Vercouteren and all our candidates stand firmly united in our belief that no government has the power to tell a woman what to do with her body. Green MPs would firmly oppose any attempt to re-open this debate in parliament.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May was satisfied he should remain as a candidate when he gave her the following pledge:

"You have my word I would never veer from the position of the Green Party of Canada supporting the right of any woman to a safe and legal abortion.
I understand that if I were to violate my word to you, Federal Council would be in a position to revoke my status as a Green."
