Green Party Statement on Eid Al-Fitr

OTTAWA – The sighting of the new moon this evening ushers in the month of Shawwal and heralds the beginning of Eid Al-Fitr, the Muslim festival marking the end of the month-long observance of Ramadan.

“This is a joyful time for Muslims worldwide,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “Here in Canada our Muslim communities will share Eid gifts with children and enjoy celebratory meals and delicacies with friends and family. But as we wish our Canadian Muslim brothers and sisters a happy time of feasting and fellowship, our thoughts also are with millions of Muslims facing war, displacement and persecution, who are not able to celebrate in the comfort of their own homes.

“On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I wish all Muslims a peaceful celebration. Eid Mubarak!”
