Green Party of Canada celebrates the Chinese New Year

(OTTAWA) — The Green Party of Canada released the following statement on Chinese New Year, being celebrated today to usher in the Year of the Dog:

“The Chinese New Year, celebrated in China and in countries with Chinese populations around the world, is an exciting time for families to ring in the new year with fireworks, gifts and a festive meal,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “We wish all of those celebrating a wonderful day, and a healthy, fulfilling and prosperous year ahead.

“Canadians of Chinese descent make up roughly four per cent of our population. Their ancestors have literally helped build Canada, starting with the heavy exploitation of Chinese immigrant labourers during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

“Today is an opportunity for all Canadians to honour their legacy, and to reflect on the numerous contributions Chinese Canadians have made to our culture and heritage. 恭喜發財, Kung Hei Fat Choi,” concluded Ms. May.
