(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement to recognize Holodomor Memorial Day:
“To commemorate this dark chapter in human history – which resulted in the deaths of up to ten million Ukrainians in the winter of 1932-33 – I call upon all Canadians to remember the Holodomor, and to honour its victims. The intentional starvation imposed upon the Ukrainian people must serve as a stark reminder to us all that totalitarian regimes should never go unchallenged in the international community,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
Jeff Wheeldon, International Affairs Critic, said: “The Green Party stands alongside the Ukrainian-Canadian community in commemorating the millions of lives lost at the hands of Joseph Stalin’s regime. The lesson we can draw from the Holodomor is that food must never be used as a weapon of oppression. Let us take this opportunity to commit to ending the suffering of the millions of people currently facing starvation, and to using food as an offering of peace and security.”
