Statement on International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada believes Canada is strongest when it is inclusive, united and free from all forms of racial discrimination.

“With the increasingly toxic politics emanating from a Trump White House, Canada must become a global champion of human rights, and stand in strong opposition to any policies that promote – whether directly or indirectly – manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, or xenophobia against refugees and migrants,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).

“As the U.S. becomes more isolationist and Trump issues discriminatory immigration bans, we must call out these abuses of power. Canadians will not bend to racism disguised as national security measures. Canada has shown how we can keep our country safe and continue to embrace the ethnic diversity that has made us a beacon of hope in the world.”

Joe Foster, GPC Human Rights Critic, said: “Like most abuses of Human Rights, racism is obtuse and is not only ethically unacceptable, but also has social and economic negative repercussions within a community and across nations."
