Statement on Commonwealth Day

(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), released the following statement:

“As a constitutional monarchy, our system of government acknowledges her Majesty the Queen as our head of state. That close connection binds all 52 members of the Commonwealth. First Nations look to the monarch to maintain the honour of the Crown, creating yet another link. Today we celebrate the family of nations created through a shared colonial past. We increasingly reject colonialism but recognize the benefits of cooperation in a post-colonial future."

“This year, as we recognize Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Sapphire Jubilee, we reflect on how far Canada has come as an independent nation in the past 65 years, while recognizing the challenges that lie ahead.”
