Statement on Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas 2016

(OTTAWA) October 30, 2016 – The Green Party of Canada issued the following statement to mark the first day of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, as well as Bandi Chhor Divas, the Sikh Day of Liberation.

“Diwali is the biggest, brightest and most popular event in the Indian calendar. It reminds us of the light inside all of us, and signifies good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. It is about compassion and love to all things. This weekend, families in my riding and across Canada gather to give gifts, share meals and celebrate.

“At the same time, Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas – the Day of Liberation – while Jain, Buddhist and other communities partake in festivities. On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.”
