(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (Saanich – Gulf Islands), issued the following statement on International Day of Older Persons:
“This year, International Day of Older Persons asks us to consider Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment. Six out of ten people will live in cities and about one in four Canadians will be older than 65 by 2030.
“The Green Party’s National Senior’s Policy provides a clear and inclusive plan to help all seniors maintain their quality of life. We will work with the Council of Canadian Governments to create a National Pharmacare Plan to provide affordable medicine for Canadians; a Guaranteed Livable Income; a National Dementia Strategy to provide more long-term care facilities; and promote intergenerational inclusion programs that create beneficial relationships for youth and seniors."
“Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada (Thunder Bay – Superior North), continued: I introduced Bill C-635, the Seniors Bill of Rights, in the last Parliament, and will re-introduce it after the election. As a senior myself, I well know how we need to ensure that seniors enjoy their well deserved right to quality housing, health care, and respect and dignity in our later years."
