(OTTAWA) - Green parliamentarians, candidates, and members join people across the world today to mark Earth Hour.
“Earth Hour is a symbolic re-affirmation of our shared commitment to each other and the planet. Block by block, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, city by city, we watch windows go dark and share an hour in solidarity,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands. “Earth Hour 2015 reminds us that the deadline for a climate treaty is a short eight months from now. Before the world convenes in Paris for COP21, let us mobilize to ensure Canada emerges as the leader we once were.”
The World Wildlife Fund established Earth Hour to raise awareness about climate change. It was first officially recognized in Canada in 2008.
“Earth Hour is a good way to remind ourselves and each other about the need to reduce CO2 emissions. But then it is important to actually take real action!” added Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay – Superior North. “The Green Party officially supports the carbon-pricing plan proposed by the Citizen’s Climate Lobby. By putting money directly into the pockets of Canadians, we can reduce CO2 emissions and poverty simultaneously, which would be a win for both our economy and the planet.”

Background: Carbon Fee and Dividend
Carbon Fee and Dividend is a revenue-neutral carbon-pricing model proposed by the Citizen’s Climate Lobby. Dividends are paid directly to Canadians on an equal per capita basis to help reduce poverty.
It is the best method for pricing fossil fuels at the source to provide economic incentives to switch to renewables energy sources. The Green Party of Canada supports a Carbon Fee and Dividend, and will work towards its implementation.
