OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is observing the United Nations’ International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17th. “The theme of the 2013 observance is ‘"Working together towards a world without discrimination: Building on the experience and knowledge of people in extreme poverty". Poverty kills more children and adults than any war. The Green Party is the only party advocating making poverty history through a Guaranteed Livable Income,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands.
“October 17th is an opportunity to hear the concerns of people living in poverty. Eradicating poverty is a goal we should collectively pursue and requires political leadership,” said May.
Through resolution 47/196 adopted on 22 December 1992, United Nations’ General Assembly declared October 17th as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and invited all States to devote the Day to presenting and promoting, as appropriate in the national context, concrete activities with regard to the eradication of poverty and destitution.
