Greens celebrate Haida Gwaii marine protected area

OTTAWA -- The news of the new Haida Gwaii marine protected area was greeted with celebratory joy within the Green Party of Canada.  The new area protects 3500 square kilometres of the Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Shelf natural marine regions, encompassing habitat of many at-risk species.  The area will be co-managed by the Haida Nation and Parks Canada.

"I am so pleased with this news," said Green Leader Elizabeth May. "This entire area is a jewel of incredibly important wilderness and I am so glad it will be safeguarded indefinitely."

Green Leader Elizabeth May was deeply involved in the efforts to protect the forests of South Moresby within Haida Gwaii, and later penned a book about the struggle, called Paradise Won.
