Calgary Shepard

Evelyn Tanaka lives in McKenzie Towne in an eco-friendly solar-powered home with her husband Geoff, their two sons Alex and Sam, and their dog Molly. She was inspired and encouraged to run for the Green Party of Canada by her colleague, Allie Tulick, who ran in the Alberta provincial election in 2019. Evelyn hopes to secure a prosperous, fulfilling and sustainable future for coming generations.

Born and raised in Calgary, Evelyn has an MA in Anthropology and a BSc in Ecology from the University of Calgary. Her professional work at an environmental sector council helped to build the green economy by transitioning auto workers in Ontario into environmental careers, and by developing programs to help newcomers to Canada find work in their environmental field of expertise.

Evelyn is a staunch supporter of local farmers and has assisted with increasing market access to local produce. She has also volunteered in many capacities including for her children’s school, her son’s hockey association, as a coach assisting families in greening their lives, and as a Director for True Vision Ghana AIDS Foundation – a non-profit organization that supports AIDS orphans in Ghana.

Evelyn believes that a healthy and biodiverse ecosystem is foundational to supporting a thriving community. Both urban and rural communities in Canada need to develop resilient and sustainable systems to mitigate the coming challenges due to climate change, habitat loss, and biodiversity loss. Real jobs are needed that depend less on resource extraction and more on sustainable, value-added industries. Tackling these issues at a community level and creating local employment in the green economy is what Evelyn will focus on as a political leader.

Evelyn is not afraid of a challenge and will take action to ensure that our children have a future worth living.  She is asking the people of Calgary Shepard to be brave and elect her as the first ever Green MP from Alberta.
