Avery Velez

Young Greens - Co-Chair

Kwe’, teluisi Avery n'in Qalipu Mi’kmaq tleyawi Mi’gma’gi Taqamkuk.

My name is Avery, I use they/them pronouns, and I am Qalipu Mi’kmaq from Mi’kmaq territory on the west coast of Newfoundland.

I am the incumbent Co-Chair for the Young Greens of Canada Council. I have held the position since being elected in the summer of 2018, and even though the Council got off to a slow start, with a brand new governance structure and nearly all of the Councillors being new recruits, we have found our footing and have spent the last few months working positively and productively together. Over the last seven months, I have worked alongside my Co-Chair, Stuart Hunter, to develop a friendly and professional atmosphere where the Council can come together and feel safe and comfortable expressing ideas and asking questions. Having focused on building these relationships, we are now in a position where we can work confidently together to produce recommendations and input for the Party.

If I am re-elected as Co-Chair I will continue nurturing this positive environment and support increased engagement with Young Greens to ensure that, now that we have had a chance to adjust to the new structure, the Young Greens Council reaches its full potential to influence the Party, advance youth engagement, and work together with the Federal Council, Campaign Working Group, Shadow Cabinet, and Staff to elect as many Green MPs to the House in October 2019 as possible.
