Is mass resettlement to Canada the best thing for the country, and the best thing for Syrian refugees?
Elizabeth May and David Frum will debate that question on May 2 at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. This is another entry into the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s Great Canadian Debates series.
The hearts of Canadians have been captured by the plight of those fleeing civil war in Syria. Many would argue that it is our humanitarian obligation to throw open our doors, and that past experience has shown such openness can strengthen this country.
Others caution that there are security, cultural and economic concerns for us, and we can do more to help refugees in their own region.
May, the leader of the federal Green Party, will argue in favour of the resolution: "Mass resettlement to Canada is the best thing for the country, and the best thing for Syrian refugees". Frum, a former presidential speechwriter and columnist-at-large in the United States, will argue against.
