Doug Hemmerling is running in Winnipeg South Centre

WINNIPEG, MAN - Doug Hemmerling will represent the Green Party in the riding’s upcoming federal by-election

The Green Party of Canada is pleased to announce that the wonderful Green candidate in the 2021 election in Winnipeg South Centre, Doug Hemmerling, will be the party's candidate in the upcoming by-election.

Doug’s passionate commitment to environmental protection is life-long and deeply rooted. A graduate of the University of Manitoba Asper School of Business and the Lakehead University Environmental Education Program, Doug has worked in conservation and northern economic development in many capacities. For the past 12 years, he has been an educator in the public school system in Winnipeg, where he champions environmental education, and develops curricula for that purpose. Doug is also part of Winnipeg’s Active Transportation Network.

Doug grew up in Winnipeg’s North End and was shaped by the work ethic and diversity of the neighborhood. He has called River Heights home for the past 15 years, where he resides with his partner Christy and their five children, Noah, Maeve, Theo, Henry and Winnie. He is actively engaged in his community, coaching various hockey and soccer teams and participating in neighborhood initiatives to keep the community safe and environmentally responsible.

Doug firmly believes that climate change is an existential crisis that must be addressed swiftly and boldly. He is the candidate for the Green Party in Winnipeg South Centre to bring a voice to this genuine threat to our planet, and to take strong action to improve things now and in a responsible and sustainable way. Doug’s goal is to unite our community and our country with the common purpose of making the world a better place for our children and all future generations.

"All of us in parliament are deeply saddened that a by-election in Winnipeg South Centre is required due to the untimely death of my friend, Jim Carr.  Our parliamentary democracy requires that every Canadian is able to call on their MP to take forward their concerns and to resolve personal issues for constituents dealing with federal issues.  It is time to elect the next MP for Winnipeg South Centre," said Green Party leader Elizabeth May, "I hope voters in Winnipeg South Centre will seriously reflect on the advantages of a Green MP. As your MP, Doug will speak for you. As leader, I give you my word that his vote will never be whipped.  Green MPs work to represent their communities and bring their voice to Ottawa -- not the other way around! I look forward to coming to Winnipeg to campaign with Doug!"

“The problems Winnipeg residents face call for a Green MP to truly represent them as opposed to sitting as a back-bencher in a government that’s been rail-roading decisions within its caucus,” said GPC deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault. “Doug is the strong, committed voice Winnipeg needs in these defining times for the city and the country.”

“I am truly honoured to be representing the Green Party in Winnipeg South Centre”, Doug said.  “My passion is environmental stewardship and responsive government.  We are at a moment of environmental crisis and I firmly believe that the Green Party offers the timely and definitive interventions we need to save our planet.  This can’t wait until tomorrow.  The time is now.  I pledge to be a dedicated servant to this constituency, one who will work tirelessly to make our country greener.  Together, we can command hope for our children.”
