Eight contestants make final ballot in Green Party Leadership Contest

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is pleased to announce that eight contestants have met the nomination and fee requirements to be on the final ballot in the Party’s Leadership Contest. Canadians have until 11.59 p.m. (PT), September 3, 2020 to become members of the party in order to vote for the new leader.

The Green Party uses a ranked ballot system, one member, one vote and online voting is open from September 26 until October 3, 2020 at 3.30 p.m. (PT). The deadline to request mail-in ballots has passed, and all mail-in ballots are due back on September 28, and will be counted in Ottawa. All campaigns will have the opportunity to appoint scrutineers.

“We are thrilled to have such inspiring and diverse contestants on the final ballot for the leadership contest,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “Each contestant brings their own unique perspectives and experiences to the race. Despite the immense challenges of running a campaign during a pandemic, these remarkable individuals have energized and engaged our members from coast to coast to coast. That’s no small feat.”

The eight final contestants are (in alphabetical order): Meryam Haddad (QC), Courtney Howard (NWT), Amita Kuttner (BC), Dimitri Lascaris (QC), David Merner (BC), Glen Murray (MB), Annamie Paul (ON)  and Andrew West (ON).

Executive Director Prateek Awasthi remarked that the eight contestants present an important choice for Canadians. “While they all share Green values, these contestants offer divergent political views, and unique experiences. Each would lead the party and govern the country differently,” said Awasthi. “The calibre of these contestants speaks volumes for the promise the Green Party offers Canada at this time.

“Elizabeth May has built the party to this point where it is a political force on the national stage. She leaves behind a strong foundation upon which the next leader can build.”

The new leader of the Green Party of Canada will be announced at a live event in Ottawa on the evening of October 3, 2020.
