SIDNEY, B.C. -- Originating in Sydney, Australia as a symbolic lights-out event in 2007, Earth Hour has grown into one of the world’s largest grassroots movements, inspiring people around the globe to take action for the planet.
“Earth Hour provides an opportunity to unite millions of people in a common purpose,” said Leader of the Green Party Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf-Islands). “We’re hosting an informal gathering for the community here in Sidney and I encourage others to do the same. Get together with friends and neighbours, pledge to do something individually or collectively to protect the earth and reduce our carbon footprint.”
This year’s Earth Hour celebrates the diversity of life on earth. A recent UN report on Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture states: Many key components of biodiversity for food and agriculture at genetic, species and ecosystems levels are in decline.
“It’s important to focus on what we can do to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and avert climate catastrophe,” said Ms. May. “Gatherings like this help to energise and mobilize people, stimulate conversations and generate ideas for action. That’s important. We need to act now before it’s too late.”
