OTTAWA--Green Party of Canada Leader, Elizabeth May (Saanich-Gulf Islands) denounces the Liberal Government’s back-to-work legislation for Canada Post workers and encourages the now majoritarian Independent Senators Group to exercise its independence and vote down Bill C-89.
“In 2015 the Liberals campaigned on restoring Canadian democracy from the damage incurred by Stephen Harper,” says Ms. May “but they keep taking more tactics from Harper’s playbook. Back-to-work legislation is an affront to unions and labour relations in Canada. I want the members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) to know that they have all my support.”
The Green Party of Canada understands that decades of evidence proves that a society with a strong labour movement is healthier, has less income disparity, and a stronger middle class. Greens believe in the rights of workers to organize and in the free collective bargaining process. Labour rights are human rights.
“Independent Senators have an opportunity to strike this heavy-handed Bill down. Labour relations between a Crown corporation and its members should be exemplary and a model for the private sector. If the Senate does not strike this down, it’s sending a signal to the business community and foreign investors that labour relations and the rule of law in Canada can be flouted.”
