(OTTAWA) — The Green Party of Canada is excited to join with Canadians from across the country in celebrating International Women’s Day 2018.
“On International Women’s Day, we come together to celebrate the significant contributions made by women to our society. Throughout Canada’s history, women have persevered in the face of enormous obstacles, achieving historic victories, from the right to vote to the right to choose,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada.
“It has been a particularly empowering time for women this past year with the growing #MeToo campaign. We must always send a strong message to women and girls that we believe them, and that we honour their courage. There can be no tolerance for sexual harassment or abuse of any kind.
“I am grateful to the Liberal government for its strong commitments to gender equality in the 2018 budget. The fact that women in Canada earn 31 per cent less than men is a national shame. Closing the gender wage gap in the public sector and with businesses under contract with the Federal government is a giant step forward.
“While we applaud the promise of pay equity legislation and the commitment to parental leave, the budget falls short on the issue of child care. The Green Party will continue to push for affordable and accessible child care so that women have the means to return to the workforce. In addition, emphasis must be placed on workplace child care options to optimize time for mothers and fathers with young children.
“We cannot lose sight of our place in the world. Canada is a wealthy and privileged country that has a moral obligation to those less-privileged. In addition to our responsibilities to Indigenous peoples in Canada, it is incumbent upon us to commit to further development aid, and to get our act together on climate change. Women and girls in developing countries will continue to face the brunt of our inaction,” concluded Ms. May.
