Unprecedented right whale deaths in Gulf of St. Lawrence requires government action

(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada, released the following statement:

“News today of the death of another North Atlantic right whale, a highly endangered species, and an additional right whale entanglement in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is devastating and requires immediate government action. This marks the eighth death of this endangered mammal this summer alone. I call on Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dominic LeBlanc to order a complete review of fishing gear and shipping lanes to understand how they relate to areas in the Gulf where endangered right whales have been dying,” Ms. May said.

“For 20 years, First Nations and activists such as the Marine Animal Response Society have been asking the government to protect the Gulf. Where is the government’s response?”
