Green Party of Canada endorses Global Climate March on the eve of the Paris Climate Conference

Ottawa, ON -- Hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens from around the world will march this Sunday, November 29, to demand that world leaders sign a legally binding global agreement on climate change at the Paris Climate Conference.

The Green Party of Canada wholeheartedly supports the objectives of the Global Climate March, and will have representatives and supporters in attendance at a variety of events occurring across Canada, including the 100% Possible March in Ottawa.

“I am hopeful that the agreement signed in Paris will be a game-changer in the fight against climate change,” stated Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP (Saanich Gulf Islands). “The success of COP21 depends on whether members of the public, who are way out in front on the issue of climate change, successfully push their governments to act -- that is why I am so encouraged by these rallies occurring across Canada and the globe.”

The Global Climate March, organized by Avaaz, will push world leaders attending COP 21 to achieve a legally binding global agreement on climate change that will pave the way for a transition to 100% renewable energy by mid-century.

There are currently over 2000 events planned in more than 150 countries.

“The Paris Climate Conference is our last and best chance to take the action necessary to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, but an ambitious and legally-binding agreement won’t happen without public pressure. That is why it is so important for Canadians to urge our new Prime Minister to remove the targets left in place by the previous government and bring more ambitious commitments to COP21. Prime Minister Trudeau could create desperately needed momentum to the negotiations by showing climate leadership,” concluded Ms. May.
