Elizabeth May to participate in Joint Press Conference with Liberal Party to Oppose Flawed Rouge Park Bill

(OTTAWA) - Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich - Gulf Islands, will participate in a press conference with Liberal Environment Critic John McKay tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. EST.

The purpose of this press conference will be to voice opposition to Bill C-40, The Rouge National Urban Park Act. Ms. May and Mr. McKay will state their opposition to the bill’s current form, arguing that the Harper Conservatives’ have refused to work with stakeholders and the Province of Ontario to address the ecological integrity of the proposed park. All Opposition parties offered substantive amendments at committee to help improve the bill based on stakeholder recommendations, but the Harper Conservatives’ voted against every amendment.

"I have worked to protect the Rouge Valley since 1986,” adds Ms. May. “It gives me no pleasure to conclude the current approach fails at the expense of decades of work by local groups. The undermining of the fundamentals of our national park system, starting with the approval of oil and gas activities within Sable Island and now dropping ecological integrity from the requirements of Rouge park management, is a tragedy. Rebuilding the national park system will be a challenge for the next administration.”
