Green Party Announces Appointment of Toronto By-Election Candidate John Deverell as Democratic Reform Critic

OTTAWA: The Green Party of Canada today announced the appointment of John Deverell as the Party’s Democratic Reform Critic. In September, the Green Party's Electoral District Association in Toronto Centre acclaimed Deverell as their candidate in the upcoming by-election, to be held on November 25.

Deverell is a career radio, television and print journalist who worked 25 years as a labour, business and political reporter for the Toronto Star. He co-authored the book, Democracy, Eh? A Guide to Voter Action. He is Founding Treasurer of Fair Vote Canada, the national multi-partisan campaign for equal effective votes and proportional representation, and continues to be a Fair Vote Canada national councillor.

“The key policies all Canadians  need and  most of us want  --  to reverse people-driven climate change and create a fair, sustainable economy  -- can’t be achieved unless we first  achieve democratic voting ,” Deverell said. “Equal effective votes for citizens, and representation  in the House of Commons in proportion to those votes, is the definition of democracy.  A  vote for the Green Party  is a demand for the  political equality of every Canadian citizen in a free and democratic society.”

Green Party leader Elizabeth May said Deverell is an important addition to the Green shadow cabinet. “John's vision for bringing the priorities of every Canadian to the House of Commons in fair proportion, and his grasp of  how we might make that happen, are most welcome,” she said. "Every Green vote in Toronto Centre on November 25 will send a powerful message to every party leader in Ottawa."
