Green Party of Canada celebrates Chinese New Year

OTTAWA – February 5 is Chinese New Year, ushering in the Year of the Pig.

“The Chinese New Year is a vibrant, festive occasion celebrated in China and in Chinese communities in Canada and around the world. Families ring in the new year with a celebratory meal and gifts followed by fireworks,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Island). “We wish them all a joyful two weeks of celebrations and a healthy, fulfilling and prosperous year ahead.

“Canadians of Chinese ancestry form an integral part of our population. The first Chinese immigrants landed on the west coast over 200 years ago when they were cruelly exploited as labourers, during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

“Since those early days, Chinese Canadians have made immense contributions to Canadian society and our shared cultural heritage. Today is an opportunity for all Canadians to honour those contributions. 恭喜發財 Kung Hei Fat Choi,” concluded Ms. May.
