Democratic Reform

Our electoral system unfairly punishes Conservative voters in cities, Liberal and NDP voters in the west, and Green voters throughout Canada.

Canadians deserve an electoral system that produces governments that reflect the diversity of our country. No more first-past-the-post. No more false majorities.

Since 1921 Canada has had sixteen “majority" governments. Only four of those governments received a majority of the popular vote.

Green Democratic Reform Will

  • Eliminate the first-past-the-post system, and consult the public on the style of proportional representation best suited to Canada
  • Slash the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) budget by 50%
  • End whipped votes, the system which allows party leaders to dictate to MPs how they have to vote in the House of Commons. Our commitment is to eliminate any system that restricts an MPs ability to represent their constituents
