Party Commentary

This resolution is consistent with existing policies on Democracy and Government Accountability. This motion is related to G14-P32, however, G14-P32 only would apply to Green MPs.

Preamble

WHEREAS the Green Party of Canada acknowledges that the value of Canada’s democratic institutions cannot be reduced to “value for tax-dollars” or “return on investment”;

WHEREAS the Green Party of Canada also recognizes that Canadians expect responsibility, transparency, and accountability from their elected representatives and institutions of government, including the executive branch;

Operative

BE IT RESOLVED that sitting Members of Parliament for the Green Party of Canada invite the Auditor General of Canada to conduct and publish a comprehensive regular audit of Parliamentary expenses, including Members of Parliament, Ministers of Cabinet, and the Office of the Prime Minister;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that given the erosion of public trust in the Senate, that the Green Party of Canada encourages the Senate to invite the Auditor General of Canada to conduct and publish a comprehensive, regular audit of the Senate.

Background

Spending scandals have and continue to erode public trust in our elected officials. At the same time, groups like cabinet and the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) have no transparency. Who even knew the name of the person that headed up the PMO until Nigel Wright and the Senate Scandal? This resolution calls for accountability and has our Green MPs leading by example.
