Elizabeth will be attending the 23rd annual Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany this week as a member of the Canadian government’s delegation.
The international community adopted the UNFCC at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. It was the first time such a broad international coalition collaborated to acknowledge and confront the growing threat of climate change. As of today 195 countries, almost all nations of the world, have signed on.
Every year there is a COP where signatories gather to assess their progress in implementing the convention and discuss recent developments in climate change. Elizabeth was there in Rio at the UNFCC’s adoption and she has attended almost every COP since.
