The criminal system in Canada currently does not go after people who post bonds for people who have been charged, and then who fail to appear at their next hearing. The commitments to financial risk are not pursued. The individual facing charges would be more likely to show up if they know their family or friends would experience that financial hardship. There are some things we need to fix. But $9 billion in new prisons is not good public policy.
