Unpublished Letter to the Editor: MP Attendance Records

Camille Labchuk

To the editor,

Your story on the high absenteeism in Parliament of many MPs and leadership hopefuls contains one major omission. You forgot to mention that Green Party leader Elizabeth May has one of the strongest attendance records at House votes. In fact, the only votes Ms. May did miss were those held while she was attempting to hold the government accountable at the climate negotiations in Durban, or recovering from hip replacement surgery.

As the lone Green MP, I venture that Ms. May is pulled in more directions than most of her colleagues. If she can manage such a strong presence in the House, maybe we should expect more from parties with more MPs.
