Ten Thousand Tree Challenge

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Twenty million Americans heralded the beginning of the modern environmental movement on that momentous April day in 1970.  This outpouring of genuine concern for the future of our planet has grown to over half a billion participants annually from nearly 200 nations.

Green parties around the globe have been on the forefront of the environmental movement for over three decades, winning seats in a number of countries and participating in government on several occasions.  The Green Party of Canada itself has made great strides in recent years. We are working hard to make the next election a watershed event.

However, we can go beyond preparing for the next election and show the public what we can achieve now.  If creating a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren is truly important to us, then what we do before and after we win seats matters.

In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, we have launched our Ten Thousand Tree Challenge.  The premise is simple: between now and our August national convention, we want to plant ten thousand trees through Tree Canada.  For every $25 donation to the Green Party of Canada through this challenge, a tree will be planted in your honour.  A $250 donation will result in a dozen trees being planted.

Trees replenish our oxygen, filter air pollution, improve the water we drink, provide homes to countless species of plants, birds and wildlife.  A healthy tree can store around 6 kilograms of carbon each year, or about 5.8 tonnes per hectare.  To put it another way, 10,000 mature trees absorb will enough carbon dioxide for an average-sized car to travel from St. John’s to Victoria and back 30 times.

These trees will be a legacy for generations of Canadians to come. Please consider investing your spring income tax return by making a contribution of $350, $200, $125 or whatever you can afford.
