OTTAWA – Green Party leader Elizabeth May is demanding an apology from Conservative Member of Parliament Pierre Poilievre for his false allegations regarding her campaign in Central Nova.
During Question Period in the House of Commons on Monday, Mr. Poilievre claimed that the fundraising page on Elizabeth May's campaign website for Central Nova contravened Elections Canada rules. Mr. Poilievre was referring to this line:
"Please note: The donation will go to the Green Party of Canada, who in turn will transfer the money to Central Nova. The tax receipt will be issued by the Green Party of Canada."
"Alleging that fundraising for my campaign in Central Nova is illegitimate is utterly baseless and without merit," said Ms. May. "I demand that the Member of Parliament in question apologize for this inaccuracy."
"The Conservatives are understandably desperate to distract attention from their violation of Elections Canada rules in 2006. However, that does not excuse dragging my name into Question Period with the implication there is something akin to their abuse in my own fundraising efforts. The Green Party has always followed Elections Canada rules," said Ms. May.
What Mr. Poilievre failed to realize is that this is perfectly legal as published by Elections Canada. According to Elections Canada's Registered Association Handbook, "registered associations may transfer goods, services or funds to their registered party" and "registered associations are allowed to accept transfers of goods, services and funds from registered parties."
