Proportional Representation
Shouldn't we speak more clearly about reforming our present "first past the post" electoral system? As the latest federal election results have shown the distribution of seats in the House of Commons doesn't correspond very well to the votes cast (we won 6.8% of the popular vote, yet, we have no seats in the House - Bloc Quebecois won 10% and they ended up with 50 seats in the House). About 7% of citizens who voted were left unrepresented in the House of Commons. Couldn’t we call it democratic deficiency?
Isn't it our duty as Canadian citizens and subjects of the Crown to provide best service to the people and best representation under the Queen's rule? Present electoral system does encourage political competitiveness but it does not reflect the mosaic of people's political desires in a best of way. It seems to me that a reasonably fair electoral system could be a combination of "first past the post" and proportional representation ones. It would promote the best of political talent in the country, respecting a variety of political ideas and initiatives that could contribute to our general wellbeing in a better way that what we have now.
Let's say that filling 70% of seats in the House of Commons through "first past the post" election and the remainder through proportional representation (from federal political party lists submitted ahead of the election to the Elections Canada, top to bottom) could be a nice way to ensure fairer political representation at the federal level (if more than 30% of seats would be filled from political party list we could debate that political parties hold to much of the decision making power in their hands). I wonder what Ms. May could do along these lines. Could our party take a firmer stand with regard to this issue and raise it with relevant offices?

Hi Aleksander Glad to hear
Hi Aleksander
Glad to hear you ve seen the light and support proportional representation. Until the Green Party formulates policy on this one, one thing you can do is sign one of the petitions in ciculation. Fair Vote Canada has a website petition that they have been running for quite a while. It s at http://www.fairvote.ca/en/sign_the_petition/. They re also working on a number of campaigns, such as the yest for stv on the upcoming vote of whether to establish a proportional voting system in British Columbia. There s also a downloadable print petition at Electoral Reform Canada`s website at http://www.electoralreformcanada.ca/. This group was started in the aftermath of the previous election to fight for proporational rep and against the the unfairness of the last elections. The organizers of this are great. They are the same people who organized the anti-harper facebook vote swap, but I should emphasize that this project is non-partisan. Hope this information is useful.

Thank you
Thank you Joel! I did sign both petitions. This is the way to go.
