Young and Green
Working on a golf course, a perfect place for a healthy summer job, I see a lot of young people come and go. And I have noticed a change in their mentality over the years. Ten years ago most of the high school and university students had no real political consciousness, now few of them do not. Ten years ago, most of them did NOT know who Jean Chrétien was, despite the fact that he often skipped out on Question Period to come and play golf at our course. Now all of them DO know who Elizabeth May is! And to a person, they think that the agreement she came to with Stéphane is great. Finally, one of them stated, the politicians are starting to care. And they are unanimous about another matter, Stephen Harper and his Conservatives have got to go.
The young of today are waking up to the fact that they were born into a dying world. And many of them want to do something about it. Ten years ago all they wanted to talk about was hockey and how drunk they got the night before, now they love to talk politics. Sometimes it has to do with the legalization of marijuana, but more often than not, it has to do with saving the planet. I believe that an enlightenment of human awareness is taking place. In Canada, the Greens and Elizabeth May are leading the charge. And the Liberals have begun to see the light. Layton needs to remove his sunglasses, Harper is blind.
The youths of today are no longer wandering aimlessly, they are in search of answers, in search of hope. Elizabeth is offering them some. And all of us as Greens need to do all that we can to continue to reach out to them. They WILL join us in the fight.
Ah, to be young again, but this time Green as well!
