From Adversity to Unity Celebrating National Flag Day
Sometimes the most important achievements are the hardest to attain. This holds especially true for the adoption of our Canadian flag, which will celebrate its 44th birthday on February 15th. Our flag is one of our country's most potent national symbols, but this wasn't always the case. The story of the red and white Maple Leaf flag is particularly powerful given today's harsh and intensely partisan political atmosphere. It is a story of perseverance through trying times to adopt a symbol that defines our nation and represents unity, freedom, and peace to Canadians and the world. Canada went nearly a century without a unique flag to call its own. It wasn't for lack of trying. A number of Parliamentary committees were consecrated to look at creating a distinctively Canadian flag, but none of them could agree on a design. During the Suez Crisis, Lester B. Pearson was troubled that the Government of Egypt would not accept Canadian peacekeepers because their uniforms, bearing the Canadian Red Ensign, displayed the Union Jack – the flag of Great Britain, who Egypt saw as aggressors. This inspired him to tackle this difficult issue once again. Finally, in preparation for Canada's centenary year in 1967, and following the emotional "Great Flag Debate", Canada got its own flag.
