Candidate SPOTLIGHT Adriane Carr Adriane Carr is one of Canada's most successful Green politicians. In 1983 she co-founded and initially led the Green Party of British Columbia, North America's first Green Party. Elected again as its leader from 2000 to 2006, she helped increase the Green vote to 12.4% BC-wide and achieved 27% of the vote in her own riding. She was the first Green Party leader in North America to be included in televised leaders' debates and was an early champion of a green economy, rights of small-scale farmers, renewable energy, getting junk food out of schools and action on global warming. In 2002 she launched a citizen's Initiative Petition for proportional representation, gathering 98,165 signatures with the help of 4,002 canvassers. Claude is an avid advocate for sustainability and Green principles as well as an eloquent and commanding voice for the Green Party, its values and policies. Claude is the son of Quebec acting icon Emile Genest."Regeneration the Art of Sustainable Living", a TV show created, produced and hosted by Claude was nominated this past year for an Emmy award. Poznan CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE From December 1-12 representatives from 192 nations around the world are gathering in the Polish city of Poznan, a vibrant and industrial city of almost 600,000 on the river Warta. They are there to engage in this year's round of United Nations talks on climate change. The conference marks the halfway point of the two-year process initiated last year in Bali and culminating in an agreement next year in Copenhagen that would enter into force in 2013 when the emission cuts under the Kyoto Protocol expire. A couple of things are certain. In dire times with a government that refuses to commit to anything that could be considered as adequate action on the environment, Canadians need the the green voice of the the Green Party more than ever. We should also all be proud that we have someone with the knowledge, expertise, passion and determination of Elizabeth May representing the Green Party and the will of so many Canadians, in Poznan.
